TFU Community!

The inaugural fundraiser for Taskforce Uplift, “The Vet Ride for Laptops”, was a smashing success thanks to the support and generosity of our military community and the rapidly growing Taskforce Uplift family. Over $20k was raised with corporate sponsorships from CIC Plus, Associated Bank, Rev Tech, Tuatara, American Legion, and literally hundreds of individuals who donated their time and personal funds to invest in the TFU mission, our veteran youth, and our shared belief that together we will do our part to uplift the trajectory of the youth of our veterans! These generous donations will be put to work in August in a way I can promise will warm your hearts. Stay tuned, another announcement to come this week!

The bike ride itself, was everything I imagined it would be. My first airplane ride was flying to basic training at Ft. Benning, GA. My second plane ride, I was jumping out of them at Airborne school. Prior to this ride, I was not a cycler, I didn’t own a bike, and all my training rides leading up to the event we’re done doing loops on a local bike trail. I was intimidated by the thought of clipping in, clipping out, shifting gears, watching for traffic….so on the trail I stayed. My first time riding on the road, was pushing off on day 1 in Barcelona. Seems smart right? Talk about sensory overload! After rides through the mountains, chateaus, battlefields, small beach towns, costal waterways….Nice was there in a blink of an eye. Although the thrill of victory at the finish line was immense, the sadness of the end….the goodbyes to the beauty of the French Riviera and my Army brothers were imminently intertwined. No more late night chats over Spanish sangria or French wine. Morning coffee breaks, too many cheeseburgers, and fist bumps at the end of each days ride. Time, as it often does, provided the beauty of experience and the reminder that nothing last forever. I could write a book on the adventure itself, but today, I’ll just leave you with a few takeaways that I will keep with me until my time to remember has passed:

  • Thank the experts (Nick Schweitzer), the guy with the big black bike box (Bill Finn) and best friends that can’t say no (Scott Garner, John and Gabby Hoover).
  • You’re never too old to learn how to ride a bike…and then jump on in it in a foreign country for a 600 mile ride with friends.
  • Lean into your dreams and resist the fear to not take the leap. If you knew how it would end, it wouldn’t be a dream, it would be a memory. Live your dream, make a memory, write a story.
  • The military community and all of its supporters continue to amaze me and probably always will.
  • Don’t party too hard the night before you have to make a climb through a Spanish mountain pass.
  • Do your research on your first bike trip route and consider one that’s not an expert route for your first go.
  • The coast line has a lot of climbs something you don’t think about in a car!
  • Cycling….is a rush. Climbing mountain passes wide enough to fit two cars and a steep drop on your right…will get your blood pumping. As will the ride down the other side at max speeds that push your bike to the brink…and, it feels good!
  • Battle buddy relationships last forever. 10 years can pass, and just like learning to ride a bike, you pick right back up where you left off as if no time has passed at all
  • What we say, what we do matters. We all have the capacity to open our hearts and provide our special talents to those in need. Not as a handout, but a hand up. The world needs you. Consider getting involved with something you love that supports those in need. It fills the cup, converts hope to outcomes, pushes humanity forward.

Thank you for following along, for your generosity, and support. Taskforce Uplift  is just getting started and the speed we’re moving and the impact that awaits just around the bend….will surprise you. Don’t blink.
